This title is best summarised with a story: One major disappontment for both C&C 3 and RA3 - WHERE THE FUCK IS FRANK KLEPAKI? I also find myself finding it more realistic that some units would have more than 1 weapon or ability to use. Once it's grown on you, you really miss these. I think the signature of this game is the unit abilities and powers. RA3, in my opinion, was very under rated for what it achieved and overly criticised for what it messed up. I also especially loved how balanced Naval vs Air vs Land is given how crazy some of the units are. There is an extremely enjoyable flow to this game and the pace/abilities leads to clutch moments you just don't see in other titles. I will say, this title also suffers from the same shitty limitations that C&C 3 suffered, but all in all it doesn't hold it back to much. The addition of the Empire and having 3 extremely distinct factions was handled as well as you could wish. I think RA3 evolved the RA2 formula extremely well considering. In my opinion it wasn't as good as RA2 but look, that's an F'n high bar to beat. If it weren't for the shitty limitations of the engine, this game would barely have aged.Ī fun and ridiculous entry into the franchise. Overall, C&C 3 was, and still is, the perfect foundation for a new entry into the franchise. The maps were really detailed and the increased fidelity really brought the universe to life in ways we hadn't seen before. The diversity in combat, strategy and tactics put in work to make this game a worthy entry.

This expanded the lore, the gameplay and the story in significant ways. I think something we all love about this game was the introduction to the Scrin, a 3rd player in the game, so to say. I dare say they learned a lot from the Generals series.

But for a grand new entry into the 3D realm, Tiberium Wars did a lot right.

Frustratingly, the PC version seems to be a shitty port of the console version. (Sorry guys, never played Generals, so I need to skip this section)Īnother leap ahead in technology.

You can justify saying any of the previous titles were your favourite but you can't deny RA2, in terms of game design, was leaps and bounds ahead of anything from the C&C series at the time. All the lessons learned in previous titles carried over to RA2, everything was streamlined compared to previous titles. Pandora's box was opened with superweapons and unit abilities - some complex strategies became possible with the tools at your disposal. Combat is fast, hard hitting and diverse. Being the last sprite-based title, I think it's fair to say RA2 was the climax of command & conquer on the sprite-based engine. Red Alert 2 was, in my opinion, the peak of the Red Alert series. The expanded scripting used in RA1 is also seen in this title, which led to some amazing moments as you made your way through missions. Gameplay wise, it held onto the slower paced combat and longer resource drops, which I appreciate. This game also brought the tiberium saga forward in many ways, creating a much more dense lore. Adding lighting effects, weather effects and changeable terrain, it's no wander this game created the best atmosphere. This title was a big jump forward in technology. The larger maps, addition of naval and expanding the aerial all made RA1 a hit. Also opting for a wacky storyline, RA1 doesn't take itself as seriously. Many of nice quality of life features were introduced as well to aid the flow of the game. (Well Dune was, but lets pretend it was C&C)Ī total change in gameplay, opting for faster units, faster ttk and an overall increased skill ceiling due to the extra micro-ability. The story and FMV cutscenes really are a treasure for this era of gaming. I'll never forget playing this game at 5 years old and finding it mesmerising. The level design was incredible, often creating a puzzle with the game mechanics. The only thing that came close to this is the cinematics in Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. "Are you picking this up? Good." Seared into my brain forever.Īnd then Act On Instinct hit with the roar of the missiles launching at the turret in the first game I'd played that had recorded music, not midi music, and sound effects better than digital squeaking.

But there's no way to explain how awesome it was to turn of Dune 2 and the synthesized Midi sounds on rather large computer speakers, Install C&C original, open it up to that intro going loudly enough to rattle the speakers.Īnd my 6 year old self is thinking "okay they have an intro cutscene but that's surely not going to continue." New campaign. I liked Kane's Wrath, if only because Joe Kucan is the master of campy dad-joke-level villainy and it was the 'final performance' of Kane for me. I skipped over Generals and have never played it.
